Weekly Update - Newsletter
Wow Time is ticking by so very quickly. JULY 15 is the deadline to get your submission in for the roving reporter contest. Send it to Jackie Tyler Woodville, WI and if you need more info look on the youth website or contact myself at 815-644-6830 or email me at sandygrabow@yahoo.com
I know the summer is flying by and I have gotten to see some of you this summer but how to get to see more of you in this next month and Congress. I know several are not making the tri to Ardmore and some of you are using the reason as the move some of us are using the reason of money and yes I do know that is all very true and can hit home hard but I hope that those who do get to attend join in the youth activities at Congress. The Junior judging, the scavenger hunt (going to do a bit different this year) the food the water park party the silent auction just a lot for everyone so hope to see you all there!
Update: June 1, 2010
I messed up again. For that I truly have to say “ I am sorry”. Even when I have my list right in front of me I miss things as I type it over, so for anyone else that I missed on the 2009 Miniature Nationals Thank you list I am sorry. Coyote Creek, Larry & Bonnie Shearin, Union, MO were left off the Thank You list of the registry web site so as I copied it over to go on the youth site I missed them and hope they are the only ones on the 2009 list I miss. They had donated a nice show halter.
On the list of things up coming for Congress 2010 I missed the sponsors of the roving reporter web cam contest for 2010. Emerald Green and Triangle Acres.
Again I am sorry and do hope that I have missed any one else.
I am hoping that my mail box is full today with envelopes for youth awards as today June one is the deadline to get the t Shirt design, Audreyy Barrett and Dan Langfeld Awards in and the Scholarship Apps I am being very optimistic that several are getting it ready and to the post office today.
Show season for many of us is in full swing. But what of those who do not show in the show ring. Do not feel left out. There are many ways for you to win. Check out the youth pack and see what you need to do to be a winner.
Update: May 22, 2010
As we are have become very busy I want to let you all know that the June 1 deadline is fast approaching so get those t shirt designs, scholarship apps, and your Audrey Barrett and Dan Langfeld awards in!
As we are trying to get things around for Congress and Nationals in 2010 to give you the youth a great experience at these shows I want you all to remember those who have n the past and several are helping again this year to give you the youth these wonderful items.
2009 YOUTH SPONSORS
The AMHR Youth would like to thank all of the following Sponsors for their support at the 2009 nationals. We appreciate everything that everyone does for us during the year. 2009 was a banner year for us. The buckets that each youth received were filled with useful items with a special Silver Frame donated by Ray Vik Miniatures. Between Nationals and Congress we made up 250 buckets. These vendors give a lot during the year to all of your local clubs and then really step up to bat for the Nationals and Congress. A special thank you goes to Larry Parnell for coming out this year and giving the youth their awards.

Update: 4-3-2010
Youth Contest for Congress 2010
Ardmore, Oklahoma
|
I have started this update sp many times. I know as usual this is late but there is some confusion out there and I am trying to get it figured out how to get it straight for all of you.
First and foremost THANK YOU to the National Board of Directors who every year budgets money towards programs for our youth. Also THANK YOU to several individual sponsors who support many awards for different programs for our youth.
One of these programs is the Youth Companion program, information found on page 75 of the youth packet
Youth Horse Companion Program - Sponsored by Amazing Sonrise Miniatures & Knollac Farm
There are many youth who own Shetland Ponies or Miniature Horses and are not active in sanctioned shows of the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR. These youth participate in numerous equine related activities outside of the show arena. The youth may enjoy this type of equine involvement over the higher stress of competition and the Shetland Ponies and Miniature Horses are enjoyed in many different ways. This is the main reason for the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR Youth Committee implementing a program geared towards these youth.
The purpose of the Youth Horse Companion Program is to reward those youth for participating in activities with their horses outside of the show arena. It will also promote Junior Membership for those who participate in activities outside of the show arena and who own registered ASPC/AMHR/ASPR equine. It will enable us to recognize those equine and youth who promote the breeds through these types of activities. Please refer to page for requirements.
Now several feel that with the formation of the YOUTH FOUNDATION that this program is no longer in effect. WRONG!!!!
The Youth Foundations purpose is to encourage all of the youth in our
association to become active within their own community. We encourage
interaction between the youth and their small equine and their community.
Our goal is to reward the youth for being a civic minded person and to
promote small equine.
Yes they seem to mirror each other in many aspects but they are two separate programs.
The main thing with these two programs and many of our youth programs that some responsibility must fall to the youth and the youth parent/sponsors in the fact they have to be applied for.
As much as any of us on the committee or who sponsors any of these awards would love to just at a click of a button have all this information for these awards right there it is not possible for that to happen. So as June 1 approaches and the first deadline for this year and some of the awards please check out the youth pack and check this youth website often to keep up on things.
Now another new project that is out there for our youth again is not sponsored directly from the youth committee but is for our youth at Congress. The Roving Reporter which can earn you a new flip Cam. As most of you kids who know me already realize that I am `OLD” and do not know a lot about the new technology out there but I am smart enough to know this would be a great chance for any of you.

2-14-2010
As I set here with all these things I want to tell everyone I also am doing this with a heavy heart not wanting to sound like the heavy. Like Mr. Parnell said in the last issue of the JOURNAL how is this going to sound after it is put on and hashed all over the World Wide Web.
First I have sent to the website a youth pack. It is not totally complete and may have a few changes in the next couple of weeks but several have wanted to see it so here it is let me know if you have any trouble downloading anything or contact the webmaster of the youth website.
Soon to come is the information for the NEW YOUTH FOUNDATION and the USEF awards.
I want to congratulate the winners of the youth awards for 2009 that you will find listed on the awards portion of the website. You will find the website is going thru some face changes in the next couple of weeks as we are trying to stay user friendly and exciting for you the youth.
Ali Olander our Registry Queen for 2010 is going to do a piece for the youth website to stay in touch with all of our youth and let you all know what she is doing to help you our youth and to learn to bring back to you the youth.
PLEASE take time to read the pack, if you can not get it to download call me 815-644-6830 and I will mail a hard copy direct to you or email me at sandygrabow@yahoo.com and I will get it to you. Why read the pack? Changes were made last year were missed by those who are on the youth committee and the BOD that did not take time to go over it when asked to check it out before it was approved.
****AGAIN the big change in the youth pack and WHY! The following wording is taken straight from the youth pack:
The major change in this packet is the awards that have always been based on All Star points are now requiring an Awards Summary Application. Problems in tracking the points on the youth as the All Star Program is set up to track the equine not the exhibitor.
Now to the part that is so very hard for me.
I have been on the youth committee for 15 years and this problem is nothing new. This problem is the tracking of the All Star Points. This problem is the reason that the Gold and Silver Brush awards were done away with. As a show secretary it is heart breaking that I work so hard to offer classes for all the youth and work very hard to have the correct youth exhibitor listed on the show results when a parent changes that exhibitor after they have entered another youth etc. before the results are sent to the office. Than when I get the reports from the office they sometimes still have adults listed in the youth classes as winners of youth with all star points. At some point in time after many calls, emails and reports, points have to be figured and awards announced and than the complaints start coming in.
I have had a lot of solutions offered but they need to be taken to your area director as they are the ones that vote on how the club is run. I am not a computer person as many of you know but over the 15 years I have known volunteers to spend weeks on hand calculations of looking thru files in boxes at the office, days and hours spent on phone calls most of which are long distance and expensive and at that volunteers expense to try and figure these youth awards because everyone agrees our youth are important and our future in the registry. Everyone is always quick to cut down the person who is the one doing it at the time and we have had several in my time on this committee and although you may not have been happy with a result the gals who worked so hard at this were also not happy, hurt, disappointed just to name a few of the emotions they went and still go through. In the time frame I have been involved those doing the calculations and leg work not only the ones with in the office, Barb, Zona, Cathy, Cindy, and more that I can not think of their names. The committee persons, Darcia Kovaik, Erica Carlson, Sue Price, Brett Hoeffs, Melissa Roberts, Amy Roberts, Amy Moerman, Tammy Belless, Dom Belless, and many more who have tried to work this out really do not deserve being slammed because you think it should be different.
A solution would be great but we have to work with the point system in the office now and so the ruling that they are to be applied for. I do not want any youth to miss out and we have so many awards to offer.
LOOK AT THE YOUTH PACK!!!!!! See if there is something for your youth.
Till the next time,
Sandy, Youth Chair 2010

Youth Update
I would like to assure evereyone that although we are aware the website has not been totally updated we are waiting to hear from sponsors. Unfourtunatly some of our long time sponsors have not responded and I hate to leave them out. I want to assure the youth and the parent/sponsors that the rules on any awrd and the award description has not changed. The only new award added has been at Congress in the riding classes and I am trying to gather the best wording to expalin the USEF awards better. BUT the all star based awards have to be applied for and that is the youth family responsibility to do.
I also will have the final results of the 2009 all star based awards done this week and will get them to our webmaster to get those updated. I am still waiting on some information on youth members and the correct membership numbers.
I want to encourage all of the youth out there past members who are renewing and those who while surffing the web find they might like to join that there are many things offered to our youth and our youth are not taking full advantage of it so PLEASE apply for awards.
JUNE 1 is the next deadline for awrd apps but that does not mean you have to wait until than. I already have T Shirts designs coming in now.
Stay safe, Sandy

Youth Update
Wow how time flies by. The youth committee is working on setting up the programs for the 2010 year. As I know several shows are underway already Please remember to watch for updates and changes in the awards programs. And as I do not foresee any major changes in those programs remember to keep track of your shows and placing to send in for these awards.
I want to bring something to you the youth the future of our great country something to think about:
Red Shirt
If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for a man...
Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together..
After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?
No. I'm escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?
No.... He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do...
Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.
Red Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women a far, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red - much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday
12-30-2010
I have been so busy this month with year end things at work I did not get weekly updates sent to the website. We had several make the DEC 15 deadline for award applications but wish more had applied. A lot of awards that will not have winners at this rate.
I am working on updating and correcting of typos in the youth pack. I will send it to the committee for approval before I put it out there. Several of you kids have asked for a change give me some ideas on what you would like to see change in how to read the youth pack.
As this New Year is approaching and with the bad weather across the country it is hard to think about the show seasons and next years awards but they will be upon us before long so Please keep watching the website for updates and I will try my best to get it updated more often.
Sincerely,
Sandy

Youth Update
Here is some new informtion regarding USEF and promoting our horse breeds.
Dear USEF Affiliates:
We wanted to make you aware of an event the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville and several other equine and educational organizations here in Kentucky are putting together called the “Kentucky Equine Youth Festival—Celebrating the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games” which will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park , indoor arena on March 19, 2010. Students from schools throughout Kentucky are invited to attend to learn about horses. They already have over 2,200 Kentucky school children registered.
There will be live demonstrations (such as forging shoes, dentistry and veterinary care), exhibit space that will showcase different breeds and horse organizations and 30-minute live demonstrations in the indoor arena of each of the 8 disciplines that will be contested at the World Equestrian Games. There are different ways your organization can participate to promote your breed/discipline. I have attached the information that the organizing group has provided. Their contact information is provided on the materials. The USEF is not conducting this event, we were just asked to pass along the information so you are aware of the opportunity to promote your breed/discipline to youth. If you have a Kentucky based affiliate club that would be interested in participating with a booth space please forward to the appropriate individual.
Kind Regards,
